WisDOT 2025 State Highway Map
A year-long GIS production contribution supporting Wisconsin’s transition to a GIS-based statewide highway-map workflow.

Overview
Beginning in June 2023, I contributed for more than a year to the GIS production workflow supporting the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s 2025 State Highway Map. The work prepared, edited, validated, and generalized statewide geographic datasets for a highly generalized statewide cartographic product. The 2025 map marked a transition of the longstanding Wisconsin State Highway Map into GIS-based production.
My Role & Contributions
I held substantial responsibility for development and refinement of hydrology and local municipality layers used in production. My work included statewide geospatial processing, hydrologic dataset development, local municipality preparation, georeferencing, spatial-data editing, cartographic generalization, spatial validation, QA/QC, and preparing geographic data for production cartography.
Cartographic & GIS Challenge
Hydrographic data were transformed from approximately 1:24,000 source scale to approximately 1:800,000 map scale. This required evaluating detailed rivers, lakes, and other hydrographic features so they remained geographically meaningful and visually legible in a statewide highway map, while maintaining consistency and QA/QC across statewide datasets.

Professional Presentation
WISCONSIN LAND INFORMATION ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE · 2025
I delivered a 30-minute professional presentation detailing the geospatial processing, spatial analysis, QA/QC, and cartographic-generalization methods used to develop the hydrologic dataset for WisDOT’s 2025 State Highway Map—communicating the methodology to a professional GIS audience.
